The pomodoro technique is a time management technique which can be used to get more things done. The technique typically uses a timer to chunk work into intense intervals of 20 to 25 minutes separated by a short 5 minute break. A longer break of 15 to 20 minutes is allowed after 3 or 4 intense sessions.
During each intense sessions there are no distractions allowed. Phones are off. TV is off. There is no chit chatter with colleagues. You focus intently on the work in front of you.
There are several apps you can use to time your sessions. The pomodoro should be use to perform high value tasks relevant to you job or business. I typically use the pomodoro when writing reports, reading, or thinking deeply about a problem.
The pomodoro is effective because it forces you to focus on the issue at hand. When you focus on something you bring all your mental faculties to solve the problem at hand without any distractions.
If you find yourself easily distracted and not able to accomplish much during the day, I would recommend that you seriously consider using the pomodoro technique.
Fellow pomodoro implementer here! I swear by this technique. My productivity really blew up! 🙂
