ACTION FAKING

Action faking is the illusion of progress by pretending to be very busy throughout the day. It is possible to be very busy but not effective. Walking a thousand steps in the wrong direction takes you farther from your goals.

Action faking usually occurs when you have no clear end in mind. It can also happen if you are playing to the gallery and you are trying to convince your audience that you are making progress. Some people action fake as a distraction from doing the real work they are supposed to be doing.

In the corporate world a lot of action faking happens in meetings. People hold endless meetings to brainstorm problems and just end up wasting a lot of time instead of simply doing what needs to be done.

Procrastination is another form of action faking. Instead of taking action people come up with all sorts of excuses to avoid doing the actual work. They work hard on minor tasks which don’t achieve anything. They over analyse and plan. The do all sorts of scenario planning. They print business cards without actually starting the business. They do a lot of market research without ever selling anything. They set up websites and Facebook pages for businesses which never take off. They read business books without ever creating any business.

Action faking is a waste of time and energy. Instead of pretending to be very busy choose to actually do the real work.
