We have all heard about the Jack of all trades who masters nothing. Well, there are some useful lessons to learn from the Jack of all trades and the rolling stone which gathers no moss. For one thing the Jack of all trades never masters anything and is always jumping from one thing to the other. So our Jack never really succeeds at anything. He is average at best with several things. We all know a Jack of all trades in our lives. There is Jack who keeps jumping from one job to the other. There is Jack, who is always starting a new business and abandoning the old one. There is Jack, who keeps jumping from one church to the other. Then we have Jack, who keeps changing girlfriends.
There is a reason the rolling stone gathers no moss. For moss to gather, the stone needs to stay in one place for some time. This is how compounding works, and time is the secret ingredient. Most great people have spent inordinate amounts of time doing the same things over and over again. Time is what refines your skills and intuition in your trade. Time develops the intuition muscle of any professional, and you are able to come up with new ideas and solve problems much faster than a novice.
The idea is to concentrate and then diversify. Focus on one career and use the earnings from this career to diversify into other investments. Build one business until you achieve a critical mass. Then, use the profits from this business to venture into other trades. Get rich through concentration and then protect your wealth through diversification.
The Jack of all trades is only admirable in movies. In real life, however, the Jack of one trade is the one who is celebrated.
