“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7.
The greatest asset you can possess is knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. A wise person can never lack what to eat. A wise person knows how to utilise the opportunities and resources before them. A wise person can solve problems and overcome obstacles in their path. It’s for this reason that I am always on a constant search for new ideas to improve my life.
To this end, I have read over 300 books in the last four years. The strategy I adopted involved building a reading habit on my commute to and from work. I spend about 3 to 4 hours daily commuting. So instead of listening to radio or watching TV I listen to audiobooks. I have also invested in a number of reading apps like Kindle, Blinkist, Librivox, and Anybooks. I also have an online subscription to the NewVision for local news, The East African for regional issues, and The Economist for international news. I have also made it a practice to buy physical books whenever I travel for the home library.
I usually wake up at 5.00 am and arrive at work at 6.30 am so I use the time from 6.30 am to 8.00 am to catch up on my reading. Most of the articles and content I have shared have been inspired by these books. The reading habit is a very powerful habit and will quickly catapult you above the average person. Remember, knowledge, understanding, and wisdom are valuable commodities but they can’t be acquired by chance. You have to put in the work!
